Administrative / Biographical History

The company was established under prospectus 1912. The first directors were John W Beynon, director of the Rhymney Railway Co and The Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron and Coal Co; Sydney H Byass, director of the Port Talbot Railway and Docks Co; E Reginald Moxey, director of the Taff Vale Railway Co; PW Tolhurst, a civil engineer, and former managing director of Messrs Tolhurst & Sons Ltd, cement manufacturers, Gravesend, Kent; and Oliver H Valpy, Sloane Square, London. The cement works were constructed in 1913-14 by the Aberthaw and Bristol Channel Portland Cement Co Ltd and established a reputation for high quality cement manufacture.
