Scope and Content

Within this series, there are several clusters of files. The largest of these (numbered 1651) relate to ICSID, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, of which the Council was a member. (There is also a single file on ICOGRADA: the International Council of Graphic Design Associations). The next largest group (numbered 75) relates to the Royal Society of Arts.

The range of bodies with extant files can be characterized as follows: educational establishments such as the Central Institute of Art & Design, and the Royal College of Art; design promotional bodies (National Register of Industrial Art Designers, Design and Industries Association, Midland Industrial Design Group, Institute of Practising Designers, Association of Societies of Art and Design); arts bodies (Fine Art Commission, Royal Society of Arts, Institute of Contemporary Arts, Crafts Advisory Committee); cultural (British Council, British Broadcasting Corporation, Conseil Superieur de la Creation Esthetique Industrielle); consumer-needs related (British Standards Institution, British Electrical Approvals Board, Disabled Living Foundation); industry related (Board of Trade, Confederation of British Industry, Institute of Directors, British Iron & Steel Federation, British Productivity Council, British National Export Council, National Economic Development Office, National Marketing Council, European Productivity Association, Royal Agricultural Society); leisure-related (London Federation of Boys' Clubs, British Tourist Authority, British Travel and Holidays Association); and charitable bodies such as the H.W. Sanderson Art in Industry Fund.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Council acted in concert with a large number of other bodies and organizations in the general round of its work. These included educational and arts institutions, professional associations, economic and industrial groupings, leisure and tourism related bodies, and charitable organizations. Files in Series 12 record some of these engagements.

Arrangement

The surviving files have been retained in their original numeric order as allocated by the Council"s Registry. This means that records in a series do not necessarily have consecutive file numbers, and may not be located together.

Archivist's Note

Record created by Lesley Whitworth, with minor edits by Sue Breakell, August 2010.

Related Material

Large numbers of organisations with whom the Council interacted are not represented in DCA/12, but in series relating to the initiative with which they and the Council were jointly involved.
