Administrative / Biographical History
Glasgow University Total Abstinence Society was formed in 1889 for the benefit of the students of the University. The aim of the society was to promote the principles of temperance both among the students of the University and also with their help, in the wider community, among people of less fortunate backgrounds. The meetings would be held at the beginning of each winter session in the Student Union. The annual temperance sermon was delivered in the Bute Hall, and different forms of entertainment were provided as a" counter attraction to the public-house". The minimum subscription to the Society in 1903-1904 was sixpence. The following year the Society changed its name to the Glasgow University Temperance Society . The last entry to appear in the university student handbooks is in the 1915-1916 edition.
