Administrative / Biographical History

David Aubrey spent 3 years at a Nautical School in Cardiff before he joined his first ship in 1934 as part of the Merchant Navy. After 18 years wandering the world he settled in Swansea with his family and joined the sea pilots in 1951. At that time there were 24 pilots, by the time he retired in 1983 there were only 12, reflecting the reduction in cargoes passing through the port. Between 1961 and 1967 he was a Ratepayer member of Swansea Borough Council representing Sketty ward. He was a Rotarian since 1957, serving as president in 1971. In 1972 he was chairman of the Swansea branch of the Police Dependants’ Trust. He also served on a number of local charity committees.
