Administrative / Biographical History

"Pat Schleger nee Maycock (b. 1928), a graphic designer, studied Illustration at Chelsea Art School in the late 1940s. In 1949 she joined Hans Schleger and Associates as a design assistant. Pat and Hans married in 1956 and in the period until Hans' death in 1976 she contributed to the studio's campaigns for clients including ICI, British Rail, Mac Fisheries, John Lewis Partnership, Penguin Books and Edinburgh International Festival. Following Hans' death, Pat continued the studio, working with existing clients such as the Edinburgh International Festival and Manchester Polytechnic. She also gained new clients including BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and the Royal Academy, London. Pat also worked as a senior lecturer at Croydon School of Art and Design for fifteen years and published a book in 2001, Zero: Hans Schleger, a Life of Design." Pat Schleger passed away in November of 2015. [See note for cited source]

Arrangement

The fonds has been broken down into sub-fonds for each commissioner of artistic works. Within these sub-fonds are series to note whether the material is promotional or for a publication of some sort. More specifically, the series are broken down into sub-series indicating the type of material (i.e. reports, logos, brochures, etc.). The original order was respected in that most material was filed by commissioner, though there was a great deal of overlap in certain files, meaning that one file may contain some material belonging to another sub-fonds.

Custodial History

The fonds is comprised of two separate gifts by Pat Schleger, one given in 2010 and the other in 2014 to complement the V&A's graphic design resources, particularly those for study in the archives. Regarding related collections, the gift of Hans Schleger's goes back a bit farther, as the archive acquired his work in 1995. Pat Schleger also gifted another collection in 2008, though this group is classified under the Hans Schleger collection.
