Administrative / Biographical History

Côr Meibion Aberafan was formed in October 1966 after a visit from the Royal National Eisteddfod that year to Aberavon. Since its formation the choir had a national and international reputation for the continual high standard of its choral work, and became an essential part of the cultural life in Wales. Concerts and reviews were taken locally, nationally and internationally, both as enjoyment and for fundraising. Focused musical directors would establish the choir as one of the best known choirs in the world which boasted a wide-ranging repertoire from hymns, sacred songs to humorous pieces. The choir took many excursions and tours abroad to Canada, France and visited and formed a long-distance friendship with their twin choir, the Liederkranz of Heilbronn, Germany. The choir had a large committee comprising president, musical director, chairman, treasurer, a ladies section , accompanists and choir's VIP's among others. In its lifetime the choir recorded many radio and TV broadcasts and released recordings on LP. In 2011 the choir closed its doors after 45 years.
