Administrative / Biographical History

Bruichladdich distillery was built in 1881 by the owners of Dundashill and Yoker distilleries, Glasgow, Robert, William and John Gourlay Harvey under Robert Harvey & Co Ltd. It was constructed of concrete, a relatively new building material for the period. In 1886 it was incorporated as the Bruichladdich Distillery Company (Islay) Ltd, with Harvey family shareholdings. It was silent from 1929 to 1937 then sold to Hatim Attari, Joseph W Hobbs and Alexander W Tolmie who in 1938 passed it to Associated Scottish Distillers, a subsidiary of Train & MacIntyre Ltd, themselves owned by National Distillers of America.

The distillery had a number of different owners in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1952 it was sold to whisky brokers Ross & Coulter Ltd, who passed it on to Distillers Company Ltd in 1954 and in turn it was acquired by AB Grant in 1960. In 1968 it was sold to Invergordon Distillers (Holdings) Ltd and incorporated as Bruichladdich Distillery Company Ltd (company number: SC046894) on 16 September 1969. It became part of the Whyte & Mackay Group plc portfolio after they acquired Invergordon in 1993. Whyte & Mackay mothballed the distillery in 1995 and it was silent until 2001 when a group of Islay landowners and a London-based wine merchant purchased it for £6 million. It then underwent a period of investment and upgrading before being acquired by Rémy Cointreau in 2012.
