Administrative / Biographical History
Eugene Ionesco was born c.1909 in Slatina, Romania. His father was a Romanian civil servant and his mother was French. In 1911 the family moved to Paris and Ionesco's first language was French. In 1936 he married Rodica Burileanu. He was a lecturer and critic in Bucharest before settling in Paris in 1938. Ionesco was a renowned playright who won many literary prizes, including the Welsh Arts Council's International Writer's Prize, presented in Cardiff in 1974. He also wrote novels and essays.
