Administrative / Biographical History

The  Glasgow University Graduates Association was formed in  January 1948  , at the  University of Glasgow , Scotland. The association's objects were to maintain closer contact between the University and its graduates; to acquire, receive and hold money and property as required; to publish, print and distribute a review or magazine; and to hold social functions. Within the first year of its existence, the association arranged visits to the Hunterian Museum and the Hunterian Library, organised a Ball in the University's Bute hall and held a chapel service.

Membership of the association was open to all graduates of the University upon payment of a subscription. The office bearers were the president, vice-president, chairman, honorary secretary, honorary treasurer, and honorary auditor. In the first year of the association the president was the University's Chancellor, Sir John Boyd Orr, and the vice-president was Sir Hector Hetherington, the University Principal. 20 ordinary members were also elected and along with the office bearers formed the general committee. Several sub-committee were also formed including the review committee who were responsible for published the newsletter and later the College Courant , the finance committee, social and other functions committee, and a general purpose committee.

The first copy of the College Courant , the Association's journal, was published in October 1948  . This became the main means of communication between the graduates and included reminiscences, histories, obituaries, and articles concerning education and other topics.

The Graduates Association ceased at some point after 1985, giving up its assets and offices to the University in return for an undertaking to continue to produce a magazine for graduates. In 2002, this magazine was still being published by the Alumni Office as Avenue .
