Brynhir Estate Papers

Scope and Content

Deeds, 1685-1895

Administrative / Biographical History

This collection consists of old title deeds of properties in the parish of Llanrhidian which were acquired by the Evan/Evans family during the 19th century. The earliest mention of the family in the collection is Jenkin Evan of Brynhir (b.1742), and his son Jenkin (b.1770) who was married to Ann Howell in 1791. The family held the farm by a lease from Lord Vernon of Briton Ferry, until in 1818. John Evan bought the freehold in 1819. On his death in the 1850s the estates passed to his youngest son Philip (d. 1881), in preference to the older son John, who had left the country and was presumed dead. Philip married Margaret Elizabeth Griffiths of Carmarthenshire in 1836, the daughter of John and Margaret Griffiths. Philip and Margaret had a daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Jane, who married George Baker Haynes. The deeds are a set of documents spanning several centuries, charting the rise of a family from yeoman (tenant farmer) status to that of minor gentry.
