North Frodingham is a village and parish in East Yorkshire, situated a few miles south-east of Driffield.
The SS Kaffraria was built in Sunderland by J. Laing & Son in 1864 and was a British cargo ship. She was bought by Bailey & Leetham of Hull in 1871 from Ryrie & Co of London. A single screw Schooner, the Kaffraria was 237 feet long and 29 feet wide. She was built from iron and had a depth of 16 feet. Originally built to displace 872 gross tons, this was enlarged to 1039 tons in 1873. Her four cylinder compound engine was capable of producing 90 horsepower. On 7 January 1891, the ship ran aground in Otterndorf, Germany. The cargo was taken by local residents, using both legal and illegal methods. The following day the ship sank, the wreckage becoming a danger to other shipping until it was removed in 1984.
