Administrative / Biographical History

The Glasgow Council of Tenants' Associations, Scotland, was formed c1925. The Association was non-political and religiously non-sectarian and formed to ensure co-operation between affiliated housing institutions, to create and encourage social and educational facilities within the housing schemes of Glasgow, and to provide a means of organisation, information, assistance and protection to the associations and members appertaining to house occupancy and civic responsibilities thereto. Membership was open to all housing associations within the city of Glasgow under the Housing Acts (Scotland). Each association could send 3 delegates to a meeting.

An executive committee ran the Association and meetings were held monthly at various locations around Glasgow. An annual conference was held each May. Strict standing orders were enforced concerning debates and motions, and no member was allowed to speak on a topic for more than 5 minutes. It is not known when the Association ceased but it was still in existence in 1958.

The Scottish Council of Tenants' Associations was formed c1948 to promote co-operation and unity of action for speedy completion of the house-building programme, with adequate social amenities, defence against high rents and rent increases, the enforcement of protective legislation on Health and Housing, and to lobby for a new Rent Restrictions Act. The membership was open to all associations that subscribed to these objects. Each association could send 2 delegates to the Council's quarterly meetings. The Association was run by a Council elected at the Annual General Meeting in March of each year. Within the Council an executive committee was elected. The Association was affiliated to the National Association of Residents and Tenants. It is unclear as to the history of the Association after 1958.
