Administrative / Biographical History

Margaret Isgouhie Balabanian was born in Glasgow on 31 Dec  1900 , the daughter of Hevork Balabanian, a photographer. She studied at the  University of Glasgow from  1918-1923 . In 1918/1919, she studied Latin; 1919/1920 French (ordinary) and Roman History; 1920/1921 Higher French, Junior Honours Latin, English (ordinary). She was absent in session 1921/1922, but returned in 1922/1923 to take Latin with honours and French and Geology (ordinary). She graduated with a first class MA honours degree in Latin and French on 22 November  1924 . She later went on to become a teacher.

When she died in 1988, she bequeathed to the University of Glasgow the sum of £750 for an annual prize in French to be known as the Maragaret I Balabaniuan Prize. It was open to students at the end of their second year, who intended to proceed to Joint Honours in French and another modern language.
