Administrative / Biographical History
The first Socialist Sunday School was established by Mary Gray in 1892 in an attempt to provide an education for children and to install a sense of socialist responsibilities. The Trade Unionist Tom Anderson created another school in 1894 and by 1912 there were over 200 Socialist Sunday Schools across the UK despite the criticism that they were subverting the minds of the children.
The National Council of British Socialist Sunday Schools was started in Glasgow in 1909. The Sunday Schools sought to move away from the Christian teaching in Sunday schools and worked closely with the Labour movement and this is evident in the choice of songs featured in the song books.
