Administrative / Biographical History
Worksop Manor, situated near Worksop in Nottinghamshire, originally built for George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, was acquired through marriage by the Duke of Norfolk and later sold to the 4th Duke of Newcastle under Lyne in 1840. The manor was sold, to the Duke of Newcastle, for approximately £370,000 and was part of the Duke's expansion and consolidation of family estates in Nottinghamshire. The Duke demolished the main wing of the house, being purely interested in the land.
In 1890, the 7th Duke of Newcastle sold the manor house and parkland to Sir John Robinson, whilst most of the rest of the estate was sold in individual lots. The sale of the Worksop Manor Estate was part of the 7th Duke's efforts to restore his family's fortune.
