Edward Oswald Fergus became one of the early Licentiates in Dental Surgery of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1884. Oswald Fergus was a pioneer of simulated clinical dental practice, inventing the dental phantom for the use of students and demonstrators. They were the sons of Andrew Fergus (1822-1887) and Margaret Naismith who also had a daughter, Elizabeth Wilson Fergus. Elizabeth married Archibald Hewat and their son, Andrew Fergus Hewat became a distinguished Edinburgh physician and originator of the Fergus Hewat cup which is competed for annually by the retired Senior Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and those of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The images were acquired from Mr John Fergus during the course of research for an article "The Fergus Family and the Scottish Royal Colleges" by Sir David Mason and James Beaton published in the Scottish Medical Journal Vol 54, 2009, pp 48-51.
