BICESTER HIGHWAY BOARD RECORDS

Scope and Content

Bicester Highway Board was formed in 1864 to takeover the responsibility of maintaining the highways from the parish vestry. It was abolished in 1894 when the newly formed Bicester Rural District Council (RDC2) took over this responsibility.

Bicester consists of the following places:

Ambrosden, Ardley, Arncot, Blackthorn, Bletchingdon, Bucknell, Caversfield, Charlton on Otmoor, Chesterton, Cottisford, Fencot and Murcot, Finmere, Fringford, Fritwell, Goddington, Hardwick, Hethe, Lower Heyford, Upper Heyford, Islip, Kirtlington, Launton, Merton, Middleton Stoney, Mixbury, Newton Purcell, Oddington, |Piddington, Shelswell, Somerton, Souldern, Stoke Lyne, Stratton Audley, Tusmore, Wendlebury and Weston on the Green.

The records were deposited as part of Acc 518 in July 1964 and originally catalogued as H.B. IV. Recatalogued by Alison Smith in October 2018. A conspectus of old and new references is at the end of the catalogue.
