Photograph of University Warders and Servitors

Scope and Content

Group photograph of University Warders and Servitors, taken at the west end of the quad at Old College prior to the creation of the War Memorial (unveiled 19 February 1923). A number of men are both in uniform and displaying medals.

Front-row, furthest left is most likely James Given, warder at the Department of Mathematics. Middle row, second from right might be W. G. Fenoulhet, M.C. (later the Bedellus).

Administrative / Biographical History

The Servitors came under the management of the Clerk of Works. The University Calendar of 1920-1921 lists the Janitor and Mace-bearer (later known as 'Bedellus'), 4 warders, 3 caretakers and a "staff of servitors".
