Metropolitan Railway Company: Directors' Reports to Shareholders

Scope and Content

This series contains half-yearly printed Directors' reports with additional reports by others, such as the General Manager, the Engineer and the Surplus Lands Committee. The Directors' reports include information on new ventures and line extensions, progress of works, capital arrangements, surplus lands, borrowing powers and agreements with other railway companies. From 1880 the Directors' reports are replaced by the Chairman's reports and give less information on these subjects. Also included in the series are accounts. The formats of these vary over time; by 1880 the tabulated accounts showed: Statement of Capital authorized and created by the company; Statement of stock and share capital created, showing the proportion received; Capital Raised by Loans (and Debenture Stock); Receipts and expenditure on revenue account; Details of Capital expenditure; Return of Working Stock; Mileage Statement Estimate of further expenditure on capital account; Capital powers and other assets available to meet further expenditure on capital account; Revenue Account; Net revenue account; Proposed appropriation of balance available for dividend; Abstracts, for example, General Charges; General Balance Sheet. Statement of Train Mileage; Estate Revenue Account; Reserve Fund. By 1880 Certificates for the maintenance of the Permanent Way and Rolling Stock were also introduced.Appendices include abstracts of agreements with other railway companies and tables referred to by the General Manager's Report including receipts per mile per week and weekly traffic receipts.

Custodial History

These records were located circa 1950 by the British Transport Commission (BTC) and returned to London Transport (LT) upon the breakup of the BTC. They were transferred in 1968 by London Transport to the Middlesex County Record Office, now the London Metropolitan Archives, but were subsequently returned to the TfL Group Archive.
