Administrative / Biographical History

The church was established in 1874 by members of Ebenezer Welsh Independent Church, Swansea, to provide an Independent church for people in the Waunwen area who were mainly English speaking, and was named Carmarthen Road Congregational Church. The church premises were built in 1876.

In 1925 the church became affiliated to the Congregational Union of England and Wales, a fellowship of churches established in 1832. In 1966 local Congregational churches were invited to covenant together to form the Congregational Church in England and Wales, and Carmarthen Road Church became a covenanting member.

In 1971 the Congregational Church in England and Wales decded in favour of a union with the Presbyterian Church of England, and the new church, named the United Reformed Church, came into being in October 1972. In November 1972 Carmarthen Road Church decided to become a member.

In 2018, following a gradual decline in membership, the decision was taken to close the church. The final service was held on 20 Jan. 2019.
