Administrative / Biographical History

Gorphwysfa Calvinistic Methodist Church, Skewen was a Welsh-language church. The cause at Gorphwysfa (sometimes spelt Gorffwysfa), Skewen began in 1810 with the establishment of a Sunday School called Salem in Skewen connected to the cause at Bethlehem Green Chapel in Neath. This flourished, and in 1843, a chapel called Zion (sometimes spelt Sion or Seion) was built on land acquired for the purpose on the north side of what is now Old Road, Skewen. This was then incorporated as a separate church in 1845. The building is still there, but disused (2023).

The church continued to worship at Zion until 1893-4, when a new chapel was built on St John's Terrace, Skewen, on the north side of the road near the junction with Park Street. This was called Gorphwysfa. There were further alterations to the building in 1903 and a ventilation system was installed in 1933. Gorphwysfa closed in 2022.
