Papers of Lady Charlotte Denison (née Bentinck), Viscountess Ossington (1806-1889) in the Portland (Welbeck) Collection

Scope and Content

The correspondence is predominantly with Lady Charlotte's family and other members of the aristocracy. The miscellaneous section contains a number of papers relating to the death of Earl Canning and various verses and riddles in English, French and Latin.

Administrative / Biographical History

Lady Charlotte Denison (1806-1889) was the daughter of the 4th Duke of Portland. In 1827 she married John Evelyn Denison who became Speaker of the House of Commons and was created Viscount Ossington in 1872. She was close to her brother, the 5th Duke of Portland. Following his death in 1879 she assumed, by Royal Licence in 1882, the surname Scott. Her letters in the Portland Collection complement the Denison Collection, also deposited in the University of Nottingham Library.

Arrangement

The Collection is divided into two series, reflecting its arrangement on acquisition from Welbeck. The first consists of correspondence, primarily to Lady Charlotte, and the second series contains miscellaneous papers.
