The correspondence relates to polar matters with particular reference to Elisha Kent Kane who was born on 3 February 1820 at Philadelphia he served as assistant surgeon with the US Navy off the west coast of Africa, in the Mediterranean, and along the eastern coast of the United States, in addition to participating in the Mexican-American War. In 1850, Kane was appointed surgeon in Advance on the United States Franklin Search Expedition [first Grinnell expedition], 1850-1851 (leader Edwin Jesse De Haven)
