Administrative / Biographical History

The Institute of Brewing (since 1 January 2001 the Institute & Guild of Brewing) was formally established in London, England, in 1890. However, in 1904 the institution amalgamated with similar bodies in other parts of Britain to form the national organisation in the brewing and associated industries, with particular interest in research and the establishment of scientific and technical standards and qualifications.

By 1983 there were seven UK regional sections, an Australia and New Zealand Section and a Central and South African Section. Each section had its own rules and customs, but were bound by the Byelaws of the Institute. The first meeting of the Scottish Section of the Institute of Brewing was held in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, Scotland, on 12 December 1904.

Initially the Institute was registered as a learned body under the Literary and Scientific Institutions Act 1854 and as such established in 1951 the Brewing Industry Research Foundation (since c1998 Brewing Research International). In 1976, however, the old Institute was dissolved by resolution of a majority of its members and a new incorporated Institute was created as an educational authority under the Charities Act 1960 and the Companies Act 1948 to 1967.

On 1 January 2001, after a vote from both memberships during 2000, the Institute of Brewing and the International Brewers Guild amalgamated to form the Institute & Guild of Brewing. The Institute of Brewing and International Brewers Guild Sections re-organised themselves into five UK and three overseas Sections, namely: Scottish, Irish, Great Northern, Midlands, Southern, Asia-Pacific, Africa, and International. Central administration of the IGB - the International Support Office - is at 33 Clarges Street, London W1J 7EE, England.

The newly formed Institute is still committed to training and education and continues to conduct examinations and to award brewing qualifications. The Institute & Guild of Brewing's mission statement reads as follows: "To be the world's leading members' organisation for the advancement of education, skills and knowledge in the science and technology of brewing, distilling and related industries, so as to contribute to the continued improvement in product quality and operational efficiency, through personal development."
