Scope and Content

The collection includes: Maryhill Burgh Records (H-MAR1), Minutes, 1856-1891 (H-MAR2); Treasurer’s accounts, 1856-1876 (H-MAR3/1); Registers of certificates of debt under the Roads and Bridges Act, 1886-1889 (H-MAR3/2); Correspondence to the Clerk to the Commissioners, 1854-1891 (H-MAR4); papers of the Burgh including elections, legislation, bye-laws, building applications etc 1815-1900 (H-MAR5); and Dean of Guild court lining plans, 1876 (H-MAR6).

Because the Joint Hospital was built jointly with the Burghs of Hillhead and Partick, there are also papers relating to its establishment at H-HIL and H-PAR. After Glasgow took over Maryhill and Hillhead in 1891, relevant hospital papers after that date will appear in the Glasgow records.

There are papers relating to the transfer of papers to Glasgow following annexation at H-SHE4/31 including correspondence, a list of the burgh's workmen and details of officials and their salaries.

Administrative / Biographical History

Maryhill originated with the construction of the Forth & Clyde Canal across the River Kelvin in 1790, this proving a focal point for both existing and new industries. By 1830 the original scattered communities had united to form a village based on paper, iron founding, shipbuilding and textiles, the latter employing a significant workforce from Ireland. The building of the railway to Helensburgh and of the Loch Katrine pipeline led to further growth and in 1856 Maryhill became a police burgh. It was absorbed by Glasgow in 1891.
