Joseph Thomas Brown was born in Benoni, Transvaal, South Africa in c1907 . Brown began studying at the University of Glasgow , Scotland in 1929 , taking Anatomy and Physiology in his first year. In his second year he studied Surgery, Pathology and Materia Medica whilst studying Medicine in his third year. He studied Clinical Medicine, Surgery, Dermatology and Insanity in his fourth and final year. He graduated MB ChB in 1933 . He returned to the University of Glasgow from 1936-1937 to do a DPH in Physics, Chemistry, Bacteriology and Hygiene. He gained a DPA in London in 1946 .
