Scope and Content

These papers refer to Leslie Hilliard's work with the World Health Organisation; an international body who were concerned with addressing public health issues. Whilst a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Mental Health Hilliard took part in a number of projects on mental health issues. This sub-group contains material relating to the activities Hilliard conducted under the auspices of the WHO.

Administrative / Biographical History

The World Health Organisation (WHO) came into being in 1948 and operates within the United Nations as the directing and co-ordinating body on international health. Experts at the WHO work in addressing public health issues and towards producing health standards and guidelines. Leslie Hilliard served as a member of the WHO's Expert Advisory Panel on Mental Health between 1953-1963. Expert Advisory Panels consist of small groups of experts within a particular field, drawn from a broad international spectrum in order to represent local experiences and knowledges. Experts are invited onto a panel by the WHO's Director General.
