Scope and Content

Engraving William Hogarth and Luke Sullivan from the original painting in the Foundling Hospital. The quotation from (Exodus 2:10) "And the child grew and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter. and he became her son. And she called him Moses". Below this is the production detail "From the original painting in the Foundling Hospital engraved by Will'm Hogarth and Luke Sullivan. Published as the act directs Feb.ry.5th.1752." Six figures stand in groups of three at the sides of the picture. On the right the Nurse, with infant Moses, is being paid her wages for raising the child. On the right two attendants whisper about the child's royal likeness and the Princess sits raised beside a pillar, at its base is the serpentine Line of Beauty. The scene is picturesque with distant pyramid and sphynx. Hogarth chose a fitting subject for the foundation which he was a benefactor.
