Scope and Content

Tree of Life refers to a stylised tree with a shape similar to that of a cypress, or sometimes a single stalk with mirrored rows of leaves on each side of it. In essence, a vertical trunk with horizontal branches. The Tree of Life manifests itself in various ways in these designs, including a more rigid structure in some patterns, and in others, a feathery effect. These patterns all date from the 20th century. Many designs feature pattern numbers in the form of 2 or 3 letters (e.g. 'LEC' or similar), and as such, can potentially be cross-referenced with two design studio record books titled 'Letter Books' (Catalogue reference STOD/201/5/5/1-2), often revealing further information such as dates and designers.

This description is part of the Design Archive  which is divided into the 142 sections, each with its own separate description.
