Lily of the West Friendly Society, Glynneath. Friendly societies were established by working people as a safety net. Each member of the society would pay subscriptions and the money would be used to assist members who were ill or unable to work due to an accident. The society would also provide payments to relatives of a deceased member for funeral expenses. Some friendly societies were independent, others were affiliated to an order, enabling members to gain assistance from any lodge within that order. The headquarters of the Society, which had been established in 1835, was the Oddfellows Arms, Glynneath. An instrument of dissolution of the Lily of the West Friendly Society, Glynneath, was registered on 1 September 1958.NAS Z 70/1/hub
