Rees Family of Penarth, Papers

Scope and Content

Ledger used by H.L. Rees to make entries relating to his own and other members of the family's financial transactions.

Administrative / Biographical History

Herbert Llewellyn Rees was born in 1851 in Neath. He married Catherine Richards of Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire during 1879 and by 1881 the couple were living in Cardiff. In 1891 they were living at 16 Stanwell Road, Penarth with four children, a servant and a nurse. Herbert L Rees’ occupation is given as commercial traveller. Having bought 3 Stanwell Road in March 1883 the family only appear at the property in 1901, when Herbert L Rees is described as a Sub Manager of a Provision Warehouse. Catherine dies in 1910. The 1911 census sees Herbert L Rees, now described as an Insurance Agent living with his 30 year old daughter Winifred, a Domestic Subjects Instructress, a married daughter of 25 years Eunice Wilcox, and his 22 year old son Herbert, also described as an insurance agent. By 1920 Herbert L Rees is listed as a ‘Private Resident’ in the Kelly’s 1920 Trade Directory, rather than under the commercial list. Herbert L Rees died during 1922.

DSA/12/4008 shows that Stephenson and Alexander were acting for the executors of H.L. Rees in the sale of 3 Stanwell Road. One of the executors was H.L. Rees' son Herbert Rees of 48 Cornerswell Road, Penarth and it was with him that Stephenson and Alexander corresponded in relation to the auction and subsequent sale by private treaty to the Cardiff Gas Light and Coke Company of Bute Terrace, Cardiff for £2400.
