Welsh Vine growers Association

Scope and Content

The collection contains correspondences of the Welsh Vine Growers Association, a booklet guide to the vineyards of Wales and a list of members and subscribers to the association.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Welsh Vine Growers Association was formed in September 1965 and is today the Welsh regional association of Wines of Great Britain (WineGB), the national trade association for the wine industry in the UK. Welsh vineyards, first introduced by the Romans, were in decline until the last vineyard in operation of the Marquess of Bute at Castell Coch, Pontypridd in 1875.A resurgence of interest in the late 60’s and 70’s saw a steady growth in production, of mainly white wine with a few reds and by 2024 there were estimated to be about 48 vineyards. Welsh Wine is now registered as a Protected Designation of Origin.
