    • 1 roll, 7 sheets. Medium: paper. Condition: the roll has been affected by dampness, with losses to both edges and the tails of several sheets. The sheets are also heavily creased.

Scope and Content

Court rolls for the manor of West Horsley, Surrey, covering the years 1473-5, 1477-8 and 1480-5. They are written on paper and contain numerous amendments and deletions, suggesting that they may have been intended as drafts, from which fair copies were written up on parchment.

  • Membrane 1: Court held on behalf of Sir John Bourghchier, Lord de Berners, and Lady Margery his wife on Monday after the feast of Holy Trinity 13 Edward IV [14 June 1473];
  • Mem. 2: Court held on behalf of Margery Bourghchier, Lady de Berners, on Tuesday after Michaelmas 14 Edward IV [4 October 1474], and court held on Tuesday before Michaelmas 15 Edward IV [26 September 1475];
  • Mem. 3: Court held on behalf of Thomas Archbishop of Canterbury and Thomas Bourgchier esq. on 9 June 17 Edward IV [1477], and court held on Thursday after the Close of Easter 18 Edward IV [2 April 1478];
  • Mem. 4: Courts held on Monday after Michaelmas 20 Edward IV [2 October 1480], on Thursday on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross 21 Edward IV [13 or 14 September 1481 - this feast day fell on a Friday, not Thursday, in 1481; alternatively it may be a scribal error for the Invention of the Holy Cross, 3 May 1481], and on Thursday after Michaelmas 21 Edward IV [4 October 1481];
  • Mem. 5: Courts held on 17 April 22 Edward IV [1482], on the morrow of Michaelmas 22 Edward IV [30 September 1482], and on Monday after the feast of St Matthew 1 Richard III [22 September 1483];
  • Mem. 6: Court held on 13 April 1 Richard III [1484].
  • Mem. 7: Courts held on 15 April 2 Richard III [1485], and 6 October 1 Henry VII [1485].
