Scope and Content

Records of Abernant parish, Carmarthenshire, 1738-1960, mainly minute books, including minutes of vestry meetings, 1805-1907; minutes of the parish council, 1894-1910; minutes regarding chief rents payable by parish properties, lists of tenements whose holders could serve as churchwardens and overseers of the poor, 1738-1790; list of overseers, 1800-1908; account of the placenames of the parish, [late 18th century]; minute book of Abernant Parish Council, 1894-1920; and Parish Council minute books, 1920-1966.

Administrative / Biographical History

Prior to 1894, monthly parish vestry meetings dealt with ecclesiastical matters, rates, and local issues. Civil parish councils were established by the Local Government Act 1894; Abernant Parish Council inherited records from the vestry meetings. Abernant Common was enclosed in 1868.
