Scope and Content

Pertaining to a missionary tour undertaken to the protestants of the Channel Islands and northern France, August-December 1844. The leader of the party was William Forster, the majority of these letters were written by Henry Tuke (eldest son of Samuel and Priscilla Tuke), and the third member of the party was Edmund Richards, who acted as guide and occasional interpreter.
The letters appear to have been collected in the form they are found now, with title pages and arrangement in the manner of 'chapters', in 1854 by Henry Tuke, following the death of William Forster on 27 January of that year, at the age of 69. Henry Tuke himself died on 4 March 1855, aged 41.
A complementary account of the tour can be found in chapters xxxv and xxvi, volume II, of Benjamin Seebohm's 'Memoirs of William Forster' (London, Alfred W.Bennett, 1865).
The Quaker method of dating used in the letters has been altered for this list to the more familiar method, e.g. 8th month 6th altered to 6 August.
