Administrative / Biographical History

Ely Lodge was built in 1862 by the Cardiff Poor Law Union as a children's home. Part of the grounds was later given over to the care of the mentally ill and the site became known as Ely Hospital. It housed persons classed as lunatics and persons detained under the Mental Deficiency Acts. Ely Hospital closed in 1997
