South Trafford Postgraduate Medical Centre Archive

This small archive comprises the core records of the Postgraduate Centre. It includes a couple set of minutes of the Postgraduate Centre committee (1962-1988), as well as attendance registers for lectures and meetings, programmes and the secretary's main correspondence files. The archive provides a useful insight into the development of postgraduate education in the NHS from the 1960s to the 1980s.

The South Trafford Postgraduate Medical Centre was established in late 1962 to provide postgraduate education (i.e. continuing education and some forms of specialised training) for doctors in the South Trafford area of Great Manchester (Sale, Altrincham, Bowdon, Hale) as well as parts of north Cheshire. It was set up at a time when the NHS was trying to encourage provision of postgraduate education. Initially the North and Mid Cheshire Hospital Management Committee was responsible for what was known as the Postgraduate Centre. The Centre provided lectures and courses for junior doctors working at local hospitals as well as general practitioners in the area; it also ran a library

The HMC set up a sub-committee to supervise the Centre. In 1969 the HMC was replaced by the Wythenshawe and North Cheshire Hospital Management Committee, and a further NHS reorganisation in 1974 saw responsibility pass to Trafford Health Authority. Thereafter it was known as the South Trafford Postgraduate Medical Centre. The Centre was based at St Anne's Hospital, Bowdon (which at the time was an ENT hospital). It had a small staff and was run by Charles Pengelly, a haematologist at Altrincham General Hospital, who served as secretary to the committee and postgraduate tutor. He was assisted by Richard Chapman Jennings, a consultant pathologist at Altrincham General Hospital.

From 1963 the Centre ran courses of Sunday morning lectures for general practitioners each autumn. There were also twice-monthly clinical meetings, held in Altrincham and Weaverham hospitals, as well as evening discussion meetings. There was also an annual two-hour clinical meeting held in association with the BMA and Northwich Medical Society. By the mid-1980s, the Centre's future was in doubt as there were no junior staff in training at Altrincham, and it was felt other postgraduate centres at Park (Trafford General) and Wythenshawe Hospitals were sufficient. The Centre was therefore closed in June 1988.

The archive was probably transferred to the Library by Dr Pengelly after its closure in 1988.
