Administrative / Biographical History

The correspondence relates to James Clark Ross and to the British Whaling and Franklin Search Expedition, 1849 (leader William Penny). This expedition attempted to sail through Lancaster Sound looking for more favourable whaling grounds and hoping to discover news of the missing British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1845-1848. Ice prevented Advice from her chosen course.
