Administrative / Biographical History
Neath Poor Law Union was formed in 1836 to administer poor relief, following the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. The Union was managed by a Board of Guardians who were elected as representatives of the civil parishes within the Union. Neath Poor Law Union built a workhouse, which opened on a site east of the town, in 1838 and did not close till 1924.
