Turnpike gates in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire. The first Act of Parliament to establish a turnpike road dates back to 1663. There was an increase in the number of individual Acts of Parliament from the mid-eighteenth century, empowering local companies and trusts to charge a toll in exchange for the right to build and maintain a road. A General Turnpike Act was passed in 1773 with the intention of speeding up the parliamentary process. County councils, which were established by the Local Government Act of 1888, assumed responsibility for these roads, leading to the companies and trusts being wound up.NAS Z 21/2/hub
