BRAITHWELL FIRST AND MIDDLE SCHOOL RECORDS

The first school at Braithwell was founded by the Church of England and supported by endowments of land purchased in the late 18th and early 19th century. For deeds and other documents relating to the endowment and title of Braithwell School Charity Lands (see P71/7).

Evidence from trade directories show a school at Braithwell from at least 1822. The 1854 Ordnance Survey map of the area shows the Endowed Free School in the centre of the village. Although the earliest original document we have is an admission register beginning in 1893, photocopies of records of this school from 1867 have been deposited and are listed under reference DZMZ21/1-8. The original documents are in private custody. A note at the front of the first photocopied log book (DZMZ21/2) records the death of John Snipe on 28 December 1860 and notes that he was "40 years Schoolmaster and Parish Clerk of Braithwell". In 1928, a new school building was erected by the West Riding County Council in Micklebring Lane to the north of the village. This is referred to in the first surviving original log book (SR137/1/1) and is shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1930. Between 1928 and 1951, the school was called the New Council School with mixed and infants departments. The admission register (SR137/2/3) indicates that by 1951 the school had become known as Braithwell Junior Mixed and Infants (JMI). As a result of local government reforms, in 1974 the school came under the administrative control of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. In the autumn term of 1978, the school opened as Braithwell First and Middle school, providing education for children aged between 4 and 12 years. The school closed in 1994 with pupils transferring to schools in Wadworth and Tickhill.
