Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Following the passing of The Finance Act 1910, the Valuation Office was set up by the Inland Revenue to make valuations of property for Estate Duty purposes - this became known as the Valuation Office Survey (1910-1915). The Valuation books (also known as ‘Domesday books’) were the first major record created by the Valuation Office at the start of the survey. After the 1910 land value tax was abolished in the 1920s, the Valuation Office was expanded, and took over responsibility for the valuation of property in England and Wales for rating purposes.
