Kencot is and always has been a small parish south of Burford and south-west of Witney; it is in Bampton Hundred, Witney Poor Law Union and the Rural Deanery of Witney. In 1966 it was united with the neighbouring parish of Holwell (having been held in plurality with it since 1960) and has now joined the Shill Valley and Broadshire group of parishes (Alvescot, Black Bourton,
Broadwell, Broughton Poggs, Filkins, Holwell, Kelmscott, Kencot, Langford, Little Faringdon, Shilton and Westwell). See further A.S.T. Fisher, "The History of Kencot" (but before 1976).
The registers etc of Kencot were deposited in the Bodleian Library by Commander R.H.Fyson, sequestrator of Kencot, in 1976, and catalogued as MSS.D.D.Kencot; they were transferred to Oxfordshire Archives with the rest of the Diocesan Archives in the 1980's.
Acc. no. 471, the Kencot Enclosure Award, and Acc.no.486, Kencot Poor Law documents, were deposited in Oxfordshire Archives in 1963 by Kencot Parish Council and originally catalogued as
Kencott PC.
A concordance of the original catalogue marks of these three deposits, which have now been integrated, will be found at the end of this catalogue.
