Administrative / Biographical History

The Geological Survey of Great Britain was formed in 1835. Its functions included the mapping of mineral deposits, recording of mine working, and the gathering of annual statistics of mineral production. In the course of this work, it acquired papers, plans and engineer's reports on mines, including some relating to Cardiganshire lead and lead-silver mines. In 1984, the GSGB was re-named the British Geological Survey.
