Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Isle of Skye Brewing Co Ltd (or Leann an Eilein in Gaelic) based in Uig, Isle of Skye, Scotland, was established in purpose-built premises in December 1995. The company was founded and is owned by Angus MacRuary, originally a Portree High School, Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland, business studies teacher. The company opened its own bottling facilities in 1998 and in the same year became a limited liability business on 21 January 1998.
As the demand for the brewery's beers in bottled format began to outstrip the facility's capacity, the bulk of the bottled range is now "brewed and bottled under contract of Belhaven Brewing Co Ltd, Dunbar, Scotland, who serve the supermarket and export markets, while Skye-bottled ales are sold on the island and in the West Highlands."
A total of 70 Scottish outlets are served direct by the company, but outside Scotland outlets are supplied via wholesalers. The Isle of Skye Brewing Co has also developed export markets in the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Iceland.
"The existing brew plant can turn out up to 30 barrels per week, and bottling runs consist of some 1,500 bottles. By contrast, Belhaven's bottling runs tend to be closer to the 15,000 mark." During 2001, a new brewhouse and grain loft were built at the Skye Brewery in order to increase its capacity.
