Scope and Content

Manuscript survey of roads in India between named settlements, giving mileage, river crossings, villages, and describing areas of particular note, for example 'jungully country', etc. The volume also contains certain accounts, possibly of Richard Johnson.

Administrative / Biographical History

James Rennell (1742-1830) was a surveyor and cartographer for the East India Company from the late 1750s. In 1765 he undertook a general survey of Bengal and in 1767 was appointed surveyor-general. In 1780 Rennell published A Bengal Atlas.
