Samuel Withers Green was born on 12 January 1894, at Finchley, Middlesex. He studied at King's College, London, and Mansfield College, Oxford. He had served during the First World War and was seriously wounded. He married Ruth Victoria Fry on 24 September 1921. He was ordained at Mansfield College. He was appointed to the Griffith College [Griffith John School], Hankow, as a missionary with the London Missionary Society, and sailed 19th August 1922. He served on the staff of the School until 1927. He transferred to the School of Religion, Yenching University, near Peking, in 1937. He was appointed as Warden of Morrison Hall, Hong Kong, in 1948. He retired on 31 January 1960. He died on 2 February 1976.
