Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Lancaster, Duncan & Co was founded in 1826 in Glasgow, Scotland, by Thomas Lancaster, Archibald Duncan, and James Duncan. Their union was an amalgamation of the Glasgow companies Lancaster & Co and Archibald Duncan & Co. The Lancaster & Co part of the business dealt primarily with the dyeing and printing of fabric, while Archibald Duncan & Co was responsible for weaving. The firm operated as power-loom weavers, dyers, printers and merchants, and traded in calico with India, South America and Australia. They had a factory at Anderston, Glasgow, and a print works at Dalmarnock, Glasgow. The company was sequestrated in 1830 , and it is from this period the vast majority of surviving records come from, although some financial records continued to be created until 1851 concerning the company's creditors and the firm's Trustee, Henry Brock.
