Scope and Content

The series comprises parish registers for the parish of Doncaster St George [Doncaster Minster]. It is divided into seven sub-series as follows:

P1/1/A: Composite registers and registers of baptisms, 1557-1946

P1/1/B: Registers of marriages

P1/1/C: Registers of burials

P1/1/D: Registers of banns

P1/1/E: Registers of confirmations

P1/1/F: Registers of services

P1/1/G: Other registration records

Some of the registers and records were damaged by the fire that destroyed the church on 28 February 1953. One, the marriage register (1848-1853), was completely destroyed.

Those registers marked with a+ were on vellum, which contracted and wrinkled making the entries difficult to read.

Registers marked with a # were on paper which was charred; some entries are lost and others difficult to read. In these cases the draft registers [see P1/1/G1] should be used, rather than the fair copy register.

If a register is marked with a * a transcript, or copy, of the register is to be found on the shelves in the reading room of Doncaster Archives.

Manuscript copies were made in the later nineteenth century of some of the registers: see P1/1/G7/1–5
