Administrative / Biographical History

Robert Campbell Garry was born in April 1900  , the son of Robert Garry and Mary Campbell. In 1928  he married Flora Macdonald, the daughter of Archibald and Helen Campbell. They had one son. He studied at the University of Glasgow , Scotland, gaining a MB ChB with Hons in 1922  . He was also awarded the Brunton Memorial Prize. In 1933  he gained a DSc at the University of Glasgow. He continued his studies at Freiburg, Germany, University College London, and at the Leeds Medical School. He became an Assistant lecturer in the Institute of Physiology at the University of Glasgow, later becoming a Lecturer. In 1933 he became the Head of the Physiology Department, Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen. In the same year he also became a Lecturer in the Physiology of Nutrition at the University of Aberdeen . In 1935  he became a Professor of Physiology at University College, Dundee, University of St Andrews. He remained here until 1947  when he returned to Glasgow University as Professor of Physiology. Campbell retired in 1970  . He was a member of various committees and associations. These included: Medical Research Council, 1955-1959  ; Scientific Advisory Committee on Medical Research in Scotland, 1948-1952; Physiological Sub-Committee of Flying Personnel Research Committee, 1951-1975 (Chairman, 1967-1975); Board of Management for the Hill Farming Research Organisation, 1963-1972; Physiology Society, 1925; founding member of the Nutrition Society, 1941 (President, 1950-1953); Fellow of the Royal Society Edinburgh, 1937; Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow, 1948. Robert Campbell Garry died on 16 April 1993  . His publications include various papers in scientific periodicals dealing especially with gastrointestinal physiology and nutrition.
